What Are Self-Directed Services?

Self-Directed Services, or SDS for short, is a way for you to self-direct your DDA budget, your employees, and services with the assistance of a Support Broker and a Fiscal Management Service (FMS). You’ll be able to hire, supervise and even fire your employees if necessary. You’ll be able to be more involved in deciding your services, how your services will be delivered, and who will be working with you so you can be more creative about what you will do in life.

What Is a Support Broker?

The Support Broker is very knowledgeable in all areas of the Developmental Disability Agency that can be self-directed. They will assist the participant and family in navigating through the many services that DDA offers.
The Support Broker will help:

  • Identify needed staff or equipment,
  • Work with the Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) on the Self-Directed, Personal Centered Plan and Budget (PCP)
  • Identify programs that may be helpful to the participant and family,
  • Communicate with other service providers, key people at DDA, CCS, and Fiscal Management Services
  • Help with timesheets and fill out employer-related documents
  • Find and share resources as needed

The Support Broker will also serve as a coach for the participant and family in helping them gain confidence in their new skills of managing their PCP.

How Are the Support Brokers Paid?

Support Brokers may work independently or through a variety of agencies and organizations. DDA pays all costs associated with the service, including the salary of the Support Broker. There are no out-of-pocket expenses for families related to this service.
